Established as a laboratory school, Alma J. Brown served a dual purpose: providing a high-quality education to the children of Grambling and surrounding communities, and offering an essential training ground for future educators enrolled at Grambling College (now Grambling State University). This unique model allowed aspiring teachers to gain practical experience in a real classroom setting, directly applying pedagogical theories learned in their university courses. The school became a hub of innovation, experimenting with new teaching methodologies and curricula under the guidance of university faculty.

The period as Grambling Laboratory School particularly highlights its intrinsic function as a practical extension of the university's education department. During this era, the school served as an invaluable, real-world training ground for aspiring educators enrolled at Grambling State. University students gained hands-on experience in curriculum development, classroom management, and pedagogical techniques, directly applying theoretical knowledge in a live educational setting. This symbiotic relationship not only enriched the university's teacher preparation programs but also ensured that the students within the Laboratory School benefited from innovative teaching methods and the direct involvement of university faculty.
